One of the most common concerns when it comes to caps, hats or any form of headgear is that wearing them too often might speed up or even cause hair loss, a worry more frequently found among men but existing among women as well. Most people have at some point probably heard this myth from family or friends and never had a reason to question it, which is why this idea has been passed on through generations and still finds new targets to discourage from using a cap, despite not being based on scientific evidence. While there are certain ways headgear can be misused to damage your hair, hair loss centers, medical experts and hair care producers alike all agree that wearing a cap does not speed up or cause hair loss!
What can get many people suspicious of their favourite cap is the many fallen-off hairs they find inside it if they only take an occasional look. While exaggerated pulling, twisting or general rough handling of a worn cap will pull out hairs just like manhandling it with your hands would do, most of the hair you find inside a used cap has fallen off naturally. With or without a cap, about 80-100 hairs fall off of our heads per day. In other words, you should take more than just the occasional look inside your cap and keep it fresh and clean. Not only will keeping your favourite cap clean prolong its lifespan, it is also an essential routine to maintain personal hygiene. A frequently used cap can soon gather hair, sweat and hair products which over time could be detrimental for the quality of your hair and scalp.
The other common misuse of caps which can bring damage to your hair is wearing them too tightly. If your cap is too small for your head, the blood will have trouble getting through the areas where the scalp is squeezed, which can result in hair being damaged around those areas. Keep it too tight for too long and you might even damage the hair follicles and cause a condition known as traction alopecia, which will lead to temporary hair loss in the damaged area. This effect is reversible by simply not wearing a cap for a while, but it is obviously best not to cause this damage in the first place by making sure you use a cap that fits your head well and isn’t too tight.
At Stiksen, quality is of great importance when it comes to our caps, and making sure our customers’ hair and scalp is not at risk of being damaged is a pivotal part of this focus. For this reason, all our caps come in different sizes as well as with adjustable straps, to ensure the perfect fit for each and every head that wears them. We recommend that you should always adjust your cap not to have it too tight and remember to readjust if you get a haircut or wear your hair in a new style.
