Stiksen Meets - Arvid Lundquist

Stiksen Meets - Arvid Lundquist

Arvid Lundquist, a dynamic force from the hip hop group Tjuvjakt, is now carving out his own path with a solo career. We met him in his studio and talked about his musical journey and new freedoms that come with artistic independence.

Arvid’s story is a captivating tale of creative evolution and self-discovery within the Swedish music scene. From childhood talent shows to pivotal performances, his journey highlights not just his musical growth, but his resilience in navigating the complexities of becoming a solo artist. Throughout it all, he remains steadfast in staying true to his creative vision.

As one can hear from your music, you are very technical in your rap and flow, which presumably requires a lot of time and thought. When are you in your best creative state of mind?
It's a bit difficult to answer, but you have to jump on the "train" as soon as it comes and give it time. However, knowing what you want to write about in advance helps a lot!

How does collaborating with Tjuvjakt influence your musical direction and performances compared to working independently?
There is a more "pop" mindset in Tjuvjakt, which allows for a lot of freedom. It's definitely easier to finalize ideas in a group - less work, haha. My ambitions and influences as a solo artist are not always as compatible with the group, and it can feel more challenging to navigate as a solo artist.

What connection do you see between music and fashion?
Music and fashion go hand in hand as forms of expression. Often, you envision music videos in your head while writing, often with different outfits and settings.

Looking towards the future, what aspirations do you have for your music career?
The main goal is to express all the music I have within me, which is impossible in itself, haha. But hopefully, I will be able to announce my plans for upcoming releases soon.

Tell us something you are proud of.
I am proud of what I have achieved so far in my career and of my friends' successes.

If you could have any superpower, what would it be and why?
Haha, I would stop time so I could get more done, I guess?

Your music often delves into personal struggles and triumphs. Could you share a specific moment or experience that profoundly influenced your songwriting, and how did it shape your perspective as an artist?
From a young age, I always wanted to be on stage and often participated in talent shows during after-school care, usually with less child-friendly music. Once, the teachers organized a competition for us to participate in—the first prize was to perform on a children's TV show. I remember we came in second, and I was upset. But later, the teachers decided that we would get to participate anyway; I still don't know why. In the end, the winners were more or less edited out of the TV show, and we took over the spotlight. This gave me a confidence that no adult had given me before.

Which life lessons would you share with your 20-year-old self?
To believe in myself more and not take advice from people unnecessarily. At the same time, cherish the relationships with those who can actually help you!

Collaboration is a significant aspect of the music industry. Can you discuss a particularly memorable collaboration you've had and how it impacted your creative process and musical growth?
There are many; you learn something new every time you have a session with a new person. Recently, it was fantastic to sit with Simon Emanuel, an early inspiration for me. Not just for the conversations but also for his delivery—his ability to create something dope on the spot, under time pressure.

What do you consider to be your most significant musical accomplishment or milestone?
Maybe when we played at Gröna Lund for the first time, on the small stage. All the homies said that I had made it, haha.

What or who was your main source of inspiration when you started creating music?
Eminem? I've always listened to a lot of American hip-hop. As an adult, I've delved more into my parents' record collections. Old soul music, samples, and 70s rock. Lately, I've been into a lot of UK and African music. I struggle to keep algorithms from making Drake my top 5 on Spotify every year...

If you could meet any celebrity, dead or alive, who would it be and why?
Maybe a young Miles Davis at a smoky jazz club in New York or Chicago.

Arvid Lundquist is wearing 107 Uniform Oyster/Forest.
